It’s not quite a web access tip but, in honor of this being the week leading up to the 25th anniversary of the passage of the ADA, ADA.gov will be live streaming its anniversary celebration tomorrow!

On July 23, 2015 from 10:00 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. (Eastern Time), the U.S. Department of Justice, the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, and the U.S. Access Board will present “A Celebration of the 25th Anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act” available as a live stream broadcast on ADA.gov.

Speakers will include Attorney General Loretta Lynch, Principal Deputy Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights Vanita Gupta, EEOC Commissioner Chai Feldblum, Senator Bob Dole, Senator Tom Harkin, and Representative Steny Hoyer.

NPR’s Joe Shapiro will moderate a panel of people with disabilities, who have seen their lives changed because of enforcement actions that the Justice Department and the EEOC have taken to ensure that the civil rights of people with disabilities are upheld.  In addition, Bob Williams will read “Doing Justice,” a poem he wrote for this event.

The live stream broadcast on ADA.gov will include captions and audio description.  To access the event on July 23rd, go to the link to the broadcast.

A re-broadcast will be available starting on July 25th, also at ADA.gov.

For more information on the Americans with Disabilities Act visit ADA.gov, or call the toll-free ADA Information Line at (800) 514-0301 or (800) 514-0383 (TTY).

Upgrades to the KNFB Reader

Contributed by Joel Zimba, Special Projects Coordinator, MDTAP

Less than a year after its initial release, there is exciting news for the KNFB Reader app.  Perhaps most importantly, iOS will no longer be the exclusive home to KNFB.  In the near future, the Android app will also be available. This will, in effect, drive down the cost of a hand-held reading machine to just a bit more than the app itself.  The significant cost of Apple’s hardware will cease to be a barrier to reading printed text on the go.

Both platforms will also gain a handy new feature.  Under the “Profile” menu, the “Scan Stand”  option will allow you to scan multi-page documents by just switching pages, while the KNFB Reader sits happily on a scanning stand and snaps pictures when text is detected.  In a quick test on my office desk this afternoon, I scanned a ten page document in about a minute.  With a bit of experimentation, capturing and recognizing an entire book could be done in little more than a half hour.  Stay tuned for timed tests with such ambitious projects.

There are other welcome tweaks, like automatic saving to dropbox.  A cloud-based backup and restore feature is also useful.  These great features will be free to all current users.

Tax Policy – New ABLE Act Resource Available

In December 2014, the Stephen Beck, Jr.  Achieving a Better Life Experience (ABLE) Act was signed into law.  Since that time, over 50% of the states have passed their own version(s) of the bill and are now turning their attention to implementing the program.  In an effort to assist individuals with I/DD, their families, and advocates in tracking their states’ progress in this endeavor, The Arc has produced a resource outlining each state’s implementation status.  This chart details the effective date and the implementation date of their state’s Act; contact information for the administering agency; as well as any current details on implementation.  The Arc plans to update this document regularly in an effort to provide the most current information, as well as to manage expectations as to the availability of ABLE accounts in a particular state.  If you would like to view this document, please do so here.

New “AT Funding Toolkits” Series Kicks Off with Materials/Links to Support Medicaid Application for Standing Wheelchair

This is a collaborative effort between New York’s State AT Project (TRAID) and the National AT Advocacy Project.  Marge Gustas of NLS is spearheading the effort to create “toolkits” for seeking Medicaid funding for a number of commonly sought items that can often be a challenge to get funded.  Although the toolkits focus on New York they should have value throughout the country.

The first toolkit focuses on the standing wheelchair, http://www.justicecenter.ny.gov/services-supports/assistive-technology-traid/at-toolkits/standing-wheelchair.  By going to the site you will see a Funding Request Checklist, with links to sample Letters of Medical Justification and other important resources to support the funding request.  Additional toolkits to publish later this year.
