Last month, in response to an executive order issued by President Biden, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a final rule to lower the cost of hearing aids for the nearly 30 million Americans who have hearing loss.

The new rule allows adults with mild-to-moderate hearing loss to buy hearing aids at a store or online without a prescription, exam, or audiologist fitting. The FDA estimates this could lower average costs by as much as $3,000 per pair. Eliminating the need for these additional steps to obtain hearing aids will also reduce not just cost, but barriers for those who may not have access to an audiologist. Retailers across the country, including CVS, Walgreens, Walmart, and others, are now selling over-the-counter hearing aids. For more on the options available, see this fact sheet.

U.S. General Administration Services logo

The U.S. General Services Administration (GSA) and Challenge.Gov have launched Access for All, a student design competition for barrier-free spaces in federal buildings. GSA invites students in architecture and design programs to apply universal design ideas to reimagine a federal workspace that provides an accessible, barrier-free, and all-inclusive experience.

Federal facilities are required to comply with the Architectural Barriers Act (ABA) Accessibility Standards. The standards provide minimum scoping and technical requirements for accessibility to sites, facilities, buildings, and elements by individuals with disabilities. The Access for All competition aims to find innovative solutions to reduce barriers so that all people with disabilities have access to federal buildings and facilities.

Applications for the competition are due by May 1, 2023 via GSA’s “ACCESS FOR ALL” Universal Design in Federal Facilities webpage. To learn more about the challenge, visit GSA’s article “GSA Launches ‘Access for All’ Student Design Competition.”
