Access to durable medical equipment (DME) often becomes vital during the aging process. Throughout the month of November, we’re highlighting various organizations that lend out items such as wheelchairs, shower chairs, walkers, and much more. Some organizations require that individuals come and pick up the items, some are conducted entirely online, and others include options to buy or just borrow the items. Click here to see what we’ve highlighted so far and be sure to continue following our blog as we bring you information on more organizations that help facilitate access to much needed equipment for daily living.

  1. Baltimore County’s Loan Closet is a great idea. Access to DME is only going to become more of a burden on our aging population as the competitive bidding program roles out to the 91 largest metropolitan areas this July.

I am a nurse practitioner providing home based primary care to the elderly and I know quiet too well the challenges of the DMEs. I have people who are unable to get what they need as well as other who have excess. I had never heard of the loan closet until this week when I read an article in one of the local news papers that the last of the closets in Baltimore county is closing because volunteers have aged and not able to manage it anymore. I know way too well the need for this closet to stay open and I have written to the outgoing group to allow me to take over and manage the closet. i remain hopeful. Mr. Trammell obtaining a DME for a patient is tougher than ever.

Hello, and thank you for recognizing the DME need in Baltimore, and for your willingness to manage a loan closet to keep it from closing. I would also highly recommend that you call our program and speak with our Director of Reuse, Ms. Provi Sharpe. She would be happy to provide you with more information on what the state does to encourage DME recycling and other activities that could be helpful to your patients. Please feel free to call us at 1-800-832-4827 or 410-554-9230.

  3. A DME (company) is supposed to receive your prescription, help you find the best machine to meet your needs, help you find the mask that you are most comfortable in, educate you about these, and provide the machine and equipment. DME’s are supposed to understand how your insurance works and have Respiratory Therapists (RT’s) who can help you have a good experience with the CPAP so you can be successful in your therapy.
