{"id":1942,"date":"2013-07-30T15:35:30","date_gmt":"2013-07-30T19:35:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.equipmentlink.org\/blog\/?p=1942"},"modified":"2013-07-30T15:35:30","modified_gmt":"2013-07-30T19:35:30","slug":"seeing-assistant-home-lite-73013","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.equipmentlink.org\/blog\/?p=1942","title":{"rendered":"Seeing Assistant Home Lite, 7\/30\/13"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3><strong>Seeing Assistant Home Lite<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><em>Contributed by Joel Zimba, Special Projects Coordinator, MDTAP<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Transition Technologies has recently released the app <a href=\"http:\/\/www.apps.tt.com.pl\/seeingassistant\/home\/index_en.html\">Seeing Assistant Home<\/a>.\u00a0 The lite version of the app is free, and it provides several useful tools.<\/p>\n<p>The \u201clight detector\u201d changes pitch as the level of light, as detected by the rear camera, increases or decreases.\u00a0 This is extremely useful.\u00a0 Understanding the level of light in a room might help for scanning of documents or recognizing barcodes.\u00a0 Another possible use is holding the camera near the lights on a telephone or other appliance to know if they are lit.\u00a0 A blinking light\u00a0will produce an oscillating pitch.<\/p>\n<p>The\u201d color recognizer\u201d reports primary colors\u00a0 I have seen other color recognizers which are more sensitive or report a wider range of colors, though this one will do in a pinch and is, of course, free.<\/p>\n<p>The bar code reader will scan until it finds a barcode and allows you to attach a label to it.\u00a0 The free version allows text tags, while the paid version may allow recorded voice tags.\u00a0 This would be useful for attaching your own labels to things.\u00a0 However, Seeing Assistant Home will not search the Internet for product barcodes like Digit Eyes or a similar QR code reader.<\/p>\n<p>There is also an included magnifier, though it uses the slightly misleading name of \u201cloupe\u201d.\u00a0 This will turn your phone into a quick and dirty video magnifier.\u00a0 Again, more extensive paid apps will allow for better magnification and options.<\/p>\n<p>While the paid version has not been tested, it apparently adds voice command functionality.\u00a0 All of the above utilities can be controlled by voice commands, rather than navigating the interface with Voice Over.<\/p>\n<p>Check it out yourself by searching for \u201cSeeing Assistant\u201d in the App Store.\u00a0 It should work on all modern iOS devices.<\/p>\n<div class=\"al2fb_like_button\"><div id=\"fb-root\"><\/div><script type=\"text\/javascript\">\n(function(d, s, id) {\n  var js, fjs = d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0];\n  if (d.getElementById(id)) return;\n  js = d.createElement(s); js.id = id;\n  js.src = \"\/\/connect.facebook.net\/en_US\/all.js#xfbml=1&appId=149587675112835\";\n  fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js, fjs);\n}(document, \"script\", \"facebook-jssdk\"));\n<\/script>\n<fb:like href=\"https:\/\/www.equipmentlink.org\/blog\/?p=1942\" layout=\"standard\" show_faces=\"true\" share=\"false\" width=\"450\" action=\"like\" font=\"arial\" colorscheme=\"light\" ref=\"AL2FB\"><\/fb:like><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Seeing Assistant Home Lite Contributed by Joel Zimba, Special Projects Coordinator, MDTAP Transition Technologies has recently released the app Seeing Assistant Home.\u00a0 The lite version of the app is free, and it provides several useful tools.
