The Maryland Department of Disabilities Technology Assistance Program Launches Statewide Portable Ramp Access Project

Baltimore, MD – Effective September 12th, the Maryland Department of Disabilities Technology Assistance Program is set to launch the Statewide Portable Ramp Access Project (SPRAP). Established with a grant totaling $43,560 from the Christopher & Dana Reeve Foundation, the SPRAP will begin loaning out a variety of portable ramps immediately. For ease of consumer access and pick-up, the portable ramps will be housed at four regional sites throughout the state- The Bay Area Center for Independent Living, Accessible Resources for Independence, Southern Maryland Center for Independent Living, and Resources for Independence.
The Statewide Portable Ramp Access Project will loan portable ramps of varying lengths and types, including threshold ramps (for small steps in and around a house), modular ramps ranging from 4 to 12 feet, multifold van ramps, and more. Marylanders will now be able to borrow a ramp for up to 120 days while additional home and vehicle accessibility solutions are identified. Consumers will return the ramp after their short-term need is met or once they have identified funding for a permanent structure, and the ramp is loaned out again to another individual. With the establishment of this seed funding, the program will remain self-sustaining and has the potential to serve up to 32 individials/families at any given time.
The Reeve Foundation is committed to supporting organizations that seek to improve the quality of life for people living with paralysis. In this inaugural grant cycle, they have awarded over $342,483 to five nonprofit organizations in the United States that focus on accessibility and assistive technology to improve quality of life for families and individuals living with disabilities.
Ramp loan requests should be directed to Lori Markland at 1-800-832-4827 or mdtap@mdtap.org.
