{"id":232,"date":"2011-10-12T09:46:18","date_gmt":"2011-10-12T13:46:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.equipmentlink.org\/blog\/?p=232"},"modified":"2011-11-29T13:08:27","modified_gmt":"2011-11-29T18:08:27","slug":"web-tip-wednesday-10122011","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.equipmentlink.org\/blog\/?p=232","title":{"rendered":"Section 508 and Maryland Nonvisual Access Policy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Sometimes, MDTAP is asked, \u201cWhat are the guidelines for making websites accessible?\u201d The \u201cofficial\u201d guidelines for Maryland websites can be found in two regulations\u00a0&#8211; the Maryland Information Technology Nonvisual Access Regulations, or IT NVA,\u00a0(COMAR 14.33.02.01-12) and the federal Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act (36\u00a0CFR 1194.22.). Maryland Nonvisual Access Policy applies to organizations that receive State funding, and Section 508 applies to organizations that receive Federal funding. Private organizations will find these guidelines helpful for ensuring that their websites are accessible to all potential visitors and customers.<\/p>\n<p>Both of these regulations give very broad guidelines as to what basic accessibility features should be included in the sites.\u00a0 Essentially, Maryland adopted its Nonvisual Access Regulation from Section 508, so the standards are essentially the same.
