{"id":1881,"date":"2013-06-25T14:27:21","date_gmt":"2013-06-25T18:27:21","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.equipmentlink.org\/blog\/?p=1881"},"modified":"2013-06-25T14:27:21","modified_gmt":"2013-06-25T18:27:21","slug":"moving-on-from-google-reader-62513","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.equipmentlink.org\/blog\/?p=1881","title":{"rendered":"Moving on from Google Reader, 6\/25\/13"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Contributed by Joel Zimba, Special Projects Coordinator<\/em><\/p>\n<p>A while ago, I wrote an article about the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.equipmentlink.org\/blog\/?p=1693\">impending demise of Google Reader<\/a>, a popular RSS aggregator service.<\/p>\n<p>Reader is apparently meeting it\u2019s maker on July 1st.\u00a0 As I discussed before, this is a disappointment to all Google Reader users, but may be particularly hard felt by those who want to read articles in a standard and accessible format.<\/p>\n<p>In the past few weeks, many services have added the ability to import your news feeds from reader.\u00a0 While popular systems like FlipBoard and Feedly are strong contenders, their interfaces are messy and not entirely accessible.\u00a0 My current recommendation is The Old Reader.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/theoldreader.com\/\">Theoldreader.com<\/a> offers a simple, fast and free service.\u00a0 It also can connect to some of the common RSS readers like Feedler for iOS.\u00a0 Exporting my feeds from Google and bringing them into The Old Reader took just a few minutes.\u00a0 The web interface is quite easy to use and highly accessible.\u00a0 It offers many similar features to reader, like the \u201ctrending\u201d section.<\/p>\n<p>No one service is the obvious successor to Google Reader.\u00a0 In the next few days, there are likely to be even more solutions.\u00a0 I have read that the popular social networking site, Dig, will also be launching an RSS service.<\/p>\n<p>Finding your ideal solution will take some leg work.\u00a0 It looks like there will be something for everyone though.<\/p>\n<p>The question remains, what else will Google eliminate in the name of cost savings?\u00a0 Some say Google Voice will be the next to fall.\u00a0 Stay tuned\u2026<\/p>\n<div class=\"al2fb_like_button\"><div id=\"fb-root\"><\/div><script type=\"text\/javascript\">\n(function(d, s, id) {\n  var js, fjs = d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0];\n  if (d.getElementById(id)) return;\n  js = d.createElement(s); js.id = id;\n  js.src = \"\/\/connect.facebook.net\/en_US\/all.js#xfbml=1&appId=149587675112835\";\n  fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js, fjs);\n}(document, \"script\", \"facebook-jssdk\"));\n<\/script>\n<fb:like href=\"http:\/\/www.equipmentlink.org\/blog\/?p=1881\" layout=\"standard\" show_faces=\"true\" share=\"false\" width=\"450\" action=\"like\" font=\"arial\" colorscheme=\"light\" ref=\"AL2FB\"><\/fb:like><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Contributed by Joel Zimba, Special Projects Coordinator A while ago, I wrote an article about the impending demise of Google Reader, a popular RSS aggregator service.
